- Born in Utrecht Holland in 1960
he came with his family to Canada at age 16.
- A long term fascination with
clothing made him enrol in a tailoring and dressmaking course to gain
technical knowledge of construction.
- This knowledge led him to start
introducing pieces he created into a second hand clothing store he
was working at the time.
- The gradual and somewhat unexpected
success of this process in turn lead him to establish a studio and
the introduction of a mens and ladies wear line in the fall of 1984
resulting in about a dozen boutiques across Canada carrying his line.
- The bond with his native Holland
has remained strong and has resulted in continued extensive time spent
there, including a period of some years beginning in the early part
of 2000.
- It therefore is no great surprise
that by many his style is regarded as Northern European rather then
North American (Dutch design is defined as essentially plain &
practical, eclectic and betrays a sense of humor.) With Carroll it
has been dubbed minimalism with a twist.
- However simple the pieces at
times may seem, they will never be considered bland or dull. There
is a continual striving to challenge the eye or the norm.
- Over the years he has shown
the menskirt (since 1985); a coat in the shape of a beach ball or
igloo; thigh high mukluks and aprons with wooden shoes.
- This sense of creativity has
resulted in some great critical acclaim throughout his career with
such accolades as "trendsetter" "follow the leader"
.
